CNES hosts CEOS round table on Space and Climate
Formed 30 years ago, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) coordinates work by space agencies and international bodies whose programmes are operating more than 100 missions and 300 instruments taking the pulse of our planet from space every day. It promotes the use of Earth observation by encouraging sharing of tools and transfer of technologies, and by boosting education and training in this field.
Wednesday 17 June in the agency’s pavilion, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall hosted a CEOS round table on space and climate and how they are managed by the international space community. This round table gave speakers the opportunity to exchange with the audience. Alongside Jean-Yves Le Gall were Volker Liebig, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation; Alain Ratier, Director General of Eumetsat; Dr Dave Williams, Executive Director of CSIRO (Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation); Shizuo Yamamoto, Vice-President of JAXA; and Dr Michael Freilich, Director of NASA’s Earth Science Division.
Participants presented their agencies’ activities and the work they are doing, as well as the partnerships they have established in the field of climate. A Q&A session with the panel was then mediated by a journalist. The closing address was given by Jean-Loup Puget, Chair of CNES’s Science Programmes Committee (CPS).
Commenting on the event, Jean-Yves Le Gall said: “The huge success of this CEOS round table is a fine illustration of the importance that people attach to climate issues. The vital work being done by space professionals on this committee will prove crucial in discussions at the glob al climate summit in Paris this December.”
