CNES launches new website

CNES has chosen the 51st Paris Air Show to announce the launch of its all-new corporate website.

Much more modern and exciting than its predecessor, the graphic design of CNES’s new website recalls the backdrops of some of the latest space movies. What’s more, this new graphic universe brings together a number of CNES websites that were previously separate, including the popular Youth and SMSC sites.

An early adopter of internet technologies, CNES created its first website in the mid-1990s. Over the years, the site has grown to become a vast digital resource, with over 12,000 pages to date and a wealth of multimedia content that needs preserving.

The new CNES website is aimed at all audiences everywhere, from the general public to professionals, including its own employees. Each of these communities has high demands and expectations, plus its own way of accessing and consuming the various types of content on offer. For CNES, the platform must do more than simply reflect its programmes and activities, it must also help to inform the public about the vital importance and potential of space technologies. This was the design brief for the new website and will guide and shape how it evolves in the months ahead. New features include:
Alongside the main corporate platform, a new site devoted exclusively to space news: https://blog.cnes.fr. It is aimed at the general public and anyone wanting to learn more about CNES and space. Visitors choose what interests them most from a vast photo wall of topics.
A library of CNES projects, which will be expanded over the months, plus a media resource centre and a range of professional tools, such as the CNES picture and video libraries.
A responsive design approach, which automatically adapts the layout for optimal viewing on all screen sizes (PC, tablet, smartphone, etc.).
CNES has embraced mobile devices and new forms of communication for a number of years, with a specific strategy aimed at social media. For example, the new cnesfr feed on Snapchat, which will also be launched at the Paris Air Show on 19 June, will feature short stories as a fun way for younger audiences to learn about space technologies. Web users will also be invited to contribute to the CNES website by taking part in the unveiling of the new site dedicated to space news.

CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall announced the launch of this new CNES website during his Press Conference at the Paris Air Show. In particular, he affirmed that: “The launch of this new website is part of a broader digital policy and a commitment to making the best possible use of these new channels and the potential they offer to promote CNES’s drive, ambition and flair for innovation. I’ve no doubt that our many loyal web users will continue to follow us and that many more will want to discover the exciting features of our new site.”
