CNES’s ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental certifications renewed

CNES’s management system was audited in October with excellent results at its four centres of excellence in Paris Les Halles, Paris Daumesnil, Toulouse and Kourou. After assessing the performance of the agency’s processes, the certifying body AFNOR Certification confirmed the renewal of its ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental management certifications.

Among the many strong points highlighted by the audit were:

  • The collaborative and innovative approach pursued in defining CNES’s strategy and position
  • The response and buy-in to environmental issues, accomplished through stronger eco-design rules for launch ground support facilities, life-cycle analysis of orbital systems and environment days at the agencies’ field centres
  • The quality of the structure in place to ensure that innovation programme stakeholders and users are listened to
  • The operational maturity of the agency’s activities, based on the audit of the ECPU payload preparation facility, tracking and through-life support functions at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) and science ballooning at the Aire-sur-Adour site
  • The robustness of project management, as shown by preparations to ready for operating the SEIS seismometer on the InSight mission, the Information System performance management project, the Callisto project and the refurbishment of the Lagrange Sud building at the Toulouse Space Centre (CST)
  • Performance at the CSG, where the launch schedule stayed on track and the AMELIE improvement approach was pursued with employees
  • The improvement drive at Human Resources
  • The security process under tight control despite strong constraints
  • The quality of knowledge management at all levels of the organization

On the announcement of these remarkable results, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall commented: “The many strong points identified by the auditors show CNES’s ability to adapt to a fast-changing and complex environment, and demonstrate the resilience of its management system. For the second year running, no non-compliances were noted, which is an unprecedented achievement. This success is down to the daily efforts and commitment of the agency’s employees, for which I would like to congratulate them, proving that we are maintaining our high standards and level of ambition driven by our four centres of excellence.”
