Philippe Clerc, CNES Deputy Director for legal and regulatory affairs, honoured by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL)

Philippe Clerc, Deputy Director in charge of legal and regulatory affairs at CNES, received the Award of Appreciation from the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) on 26 September at the 64th IAC Congress in Beijing.

This award, a first for a CNES representative and for a professional outside the world of teaching and academia, was made “in recognition of his extraordinary and significant contributions to the implementation of legal and regulatory aspects of space activities through his role in the French National Space Agency and other organizations for over two decades, his instrumental role in the preparation, drafting, legislative processing and implementation of the French national space legislation, and his active contributions as a member of IISL for over a decade in the conferences and colloquia organized by the Institute, and in other academic courses in France and Europe.”

In his acceptance speech, Philippe Clerc stressed that this award for his work in law also owed much to his team and to CNES’s role in drafting France’s new space legislation and technical regulations. He also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in establishing legal instruments for space activities and their applications.

Philippe Clerc is Deputy Director in charge of legal and regulatory affairs at CNES, working within the Procurement, Sales and Legal Affairs Directorate. He has worked in several positions in the space sector, with CNES from 1989, at the Ministry for Research from 1998 to 2003 and at Arianespace from 2003 to 2006, before returning to CNES in 2007.
