CNES at Ecole Polytechnique Space Day

CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall was at the Ecole Polytechnique’s Space Day on Wednesday, where he was invited to open a symposium on the school’s partnerships with the space industry. Alongside participants from Thales Alenia Space, Astrium and Safran, he presented France’s space programme to students.

CNES and the Ecole Polytechnique are longstanding partners in space, pursuing a shared aim to educate future executives and engineers and maintain France’s world-class space research. To this end, a Master’s Educational Exchange Program was launched at the start of the year by CNES, the Ecole Polytechnique, the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to foster development of bilateral missions and projects.

After the introductory speech by the Ecole Polytechnique’s President Jacques Biot, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall opened the symposium on the school’s space industry partnerships with a presentation of the French space programme.

CNES Associate Director General Joël Barre also took part in a roundtable discussion on the Ecole Polytechnique’s role in meeting training and research challenges for space in the 21st century.

Alongside these contributions, CNES also presented an exhibition of its five core missions, Ariane 6, the Curiosity Mars rover, an interactive hologram silhouette and the Pleiades programme, showing its applications and spectacular views of earth.

At the end of the event, Jean-Yves Le Gall said: “CNES has long-established close ties with the Ecole Polytechnique and we have 44 alumni from the school working at the agency today. We have always worked hand in hand to meet the challenges of space, the latest example being the Master’s Educational Exchange Program launched earlier this year by CNES, the Ecole Polytechnique, CalTech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.”
