Annual CNES-DLR meeting in Berlin

CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and a team of senior associates were in Berlin on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 January to meet their counterparts at the German space agency DLR, in particular the Chairman of its Executive Board, Johann-Dietrich Wörner.

Jean-Yves Le Gall and a team of senior associates met Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Chairman of the German space agency DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt), and several of its top officials.

This meeting provided the opportunity to talk about the close and longstanding ties that France and Germany have established in space, as well as certain joint programmes, especially MERLIN (MEthane Remote sensing Lldar MissioN).

Discussions also focused on groundwork for the next ministerial-level meeting of the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Luxembourg in December. The main items on the agenda of this meeting were reviewed, chief among them consolidation of Europe’s launcher industry through the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 programmes, continuing exploitation of the International Space Station (ISS) and European space governance.

After the meeting, Jean-Yves Le Gall stated: “This meeting was extremely constructive and we are now well on the way towards defining a joint French-German position on all aspects of space. This will allow us to prepare effectively and with the best chance of success for the next ESA Ministerial Council meeting, which is set to prove decisive for the future of spacefaring Europe.”
