France-Sweden space cooperation, CNES and SNSB meet

Wednesday 18 October, a delegation led by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall met the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB) and its Director General, Olle Norberg. Discussions focused on projects that CNES is working on with its Swedish partners, which include balloon launches, student experimental rocket campaigns and Earth-observation programmes.

CNES underlined the selection of the HEMERA project by the European Commission as part of its Horizon 2020 programme, for which CNES and the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) will be providing balloon launches from the Esrange base in Sweden, while SNSB will be in charge of planning scientific experiments. In over 20 years, CNES and SSC have acquired extensive expertise in launching balloons of various sizes from high latitudes to meet the demand for data from the French and European scientific community. The Esrange launch base has also been used for a number of years now for SERA student experimental rocket campaigns under CNES’s PERSEUS programme. Both French and Swedish students take part in these campaigns, the next of which will be taking place in April 2018. The meeting also recalled Sweden’s use of Pleiades satellite data, which remains one of the cornerstones of French-Swedish cooperation.

Today’s meeting followed the decision by French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven on 31 July to adopt a partnership for innovation set to be signed at the Gothenburg Summit on 17 November. This partnership invites France’s scientists and firms to work with their Swedish counterparts to develop new ways of using satellite data in the fields of environmental and climate research, communications and transport.

After the meeting, Jean-Yves Le Gall commented: “France and Sweden’s long history of cooperation in space is synonymous with innovation and success. The partnership for innovation that our two nations are set to seal confirms our desire to continue working together in space and lays the foundation for future joint projects.”
