First French New Space summit event, 7 and 8 July 2022, launch of public consultation open to all

The emergence of New Space is driving a deep transformation of the space industry, forcing established stakeholders to rethink their strategies in response to the wave of initiatives from new private players over the last 20 years. As a result, the space sector is now much easier to break into for new entrants, opening up significant perspectives in a fast-moving context that French space stakeholders must address to keep pace with international competitors.

With this aim in mind, a collective of French players convinced of the need to speed up the transformation of the space ecosystem—3i3s Europa, Alliance NewSpace France, ASTech Paris Region, CNES, ESA, Eutelsat, Geodesic, GIFAS, ISAE SUPAERO, NewSpace Club, Paris-Saclay Hardware Accelerator, SAFE and Toulouse Capitole University (Sirius Chair)—has decided to organize the first Assises du NewSpace summit event on 7 and 8 July at Station F in Paris. And to set the stage, a wide-ranging public consultation open to all interested individuals and corporations is being launched.

Act 1 - Consultation open to all from today until 31 March
A wide-ranging public consultation is being launched today, open to all individuals and corporations interested in addressing the following question: “What measures and conditions do you believe are required to make French New Space a top-three world player within the next five years?” Aimed at manufacturers, entrepreneurs, project proponents, investors, private and public sector customers, research scientists and students, this consultation seeks to canvass opinions on this key national challenge. Contributions will be structured around ten specialist topics, overseen by a team of 16 coordinators and then assessed by the collective behind the Assises du NewSpace event. They will feed into the event programme on 7 and 8 July and culminate with a final report presented to the public in September.

This broad debate will for the first time be led via a participative platform dedicated to the Assises du NewSpace event, accessible here: www.lesassisesdunewspace.org.

Act 2 - First Assises du NewSpace to federate the ecosystem and forge a strategic roadmap
Today, a new space economy is taking shape, fuelled by numerous services here on Earth and in orbit that are leveraging disruptive innovations in the design, construction and launch of satellites, and exploiting space data, digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Government procurement reform in the United States, initiated nearly 20 years ago, is today producing notable effects: space tech entrepreneurs and start-ups are transforming the global space industry, bringing wider access to the benefits of developing space activities for individuals, business and nations alike.

In 2021, nearly $20 billion of private funds—principally in the United States—were invested in this new economy. France, through its national efforts and its contribution to ESA, has been in the circle of leading space powers from the early days and it must remain there, with the goal of being in the world’s top three New Space economies within the next five years. This is the prospect underpinning the first Assises du NewSpace event and the subsequent roadmap designed to enable France’s space industry and its European partners to stay among the world’s premier space powers.

This event will bring together stakeholders from the space, digital and innovation ecosystems for discussions and debate around a programme of panel sessions, workshops and presentations focusing on structural issues such as funding, public procurement, partnership, research and training, the aim being to chart the state of the art of French New Space and spawn concrete proposals to make it a top-three player in the world within the next five years. The event will also serve as a meeting place for stakeholders in this field.
