CNES announces the creation of a “Space for Guiana” Division reporting to the Director of the Guiana Space Centre (CSG). The new division’s mission will be to serve as the interface between CNES and stakeholders driving economic and social development in French Guiana. Its lines of action will cover management of the various financial instruments put in place by the CSG and engineering support to accelerate the deployment of space applications for the region’s institutions, businesses and citizens.
In practice, with the aim of promoting digital and space applications in French Guiana, the Division will bring the agency’s technical expertise to different domains—bridging the digital divide, tele-applications, etc.—at the request of institutions and regional and local authorities. This new unit will be tasked with monitoring work progress and providing support to a non-profit association named Guyane Connect, of which CNES is the founding member, as well as representing CNES on the boards of the University of French Guiana, the Kourou Institute of Technology and the French Guiana development and innovation agency.
The Space for Guiana Division will manage all the financial aspects of projects and track their progress under the agency’s partnership agreements with Guianese authorities and institutions.
The Space for Guiana Division will also be responsible across French Guiana for developing ConnectbyCNES activities aimed at forging close ties with communities that are innovating, to understand their needs and help them identify space applications that could be strategic for their development. ConnectbyCNES is taking space outside its usual sphere of influence, focusing on the three priority domains of mobility, healthcare and the environment.
