CP059-2008 - CNES in the European City of Science

 

CNES will be taking part in the European City of Science, at the Grand Palais, Paris, from 14 to 16 November.

Over these three days devoted to the promotion of science in the great hall of the Grand Palais, Paris, CNES, France’s Space Agency (the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales) will be presenting the uses of Earth observation satellites and their contribution to Europe’s GMES programme.

The purpose of the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) programme is to set up a Europe-wide service to help with environment issues. It is a joint initiative of the European
The European City of Science event is being organised by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research as a part of the French Presidency of the European Union and carries the European Cultural Season label.

For the three-day event, CNES will be in the Space Pavilion with:

- two cutting-edge interactive touch-screen displays about Space activities
- a revolving globe and Internet screens giving information about the state of the oceans, presented by Mercator-Ocean
- projections showing the applications of Space techniques for Earth observation
- discussions and debates with specialists and professionals
- a workshop where young people can see how satellites are built in dust-free conditions.

The public is invited to explore the CNES area and to participate fully in all the interactive displays and meetings about CNES activities and GMES.
