Co-chaired by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and Nicolas Chamussy, President of the GIFAS Space Commission, the Steering Committee of the CoSpace government-industry space coordination committee met for the 14th time on Tuesday 9 May at CNES’s Head Office in Paris. The key aims was to prepare for a future CoSpace meeting at ministerial level, aimed at establishing and strengthening French leadership within the space sector.

The CoSpace Steering Committee welcomed the success of the last ministerial-level meeting of the European Space Agency Council, where France was the main contributor. Topics covered at today’s meeting included:
·    The drive to develop satellite internet access, so vital to reaching the objectives of France’s fast-broadband strategy
·    The development of new supply chains for electronic components compatible with the space environment
·    The focus of future Earth observation activities (oceans, hydrological networks, vegetation) and the progress of the Microcarb satellite, which is tasked with measuring carbon dioxide emissions across our entire planet from 2020 onwards.
·    The continuation of Boosters—structures designed to speed of the development of application services that overlap the space, digital and other economic sectors.

The steering committee is the executive structure of CoSpace, founded in September 2013. CoSpace brings together all stakeholders from the French space sector with representatives from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs, Ministry for the Economy and Finance and Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, as well as from the Secretariat-General for National Defence and Security (SGNDS), CNES, the French defence procurement agency (DGA), the French enterprise agency (DGE), the French aerospace industries association (ONERA), plus space sector companies, major manufacturing and operating groups, equipment suppliers, mid-tier firms and SMEs.

The last meeting of CoSpace was held on 30 June 2016 and was co-chaired by Emmanuel Macron, former Minister of the Economy, Industry and Digital Technologies, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Defence, and Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research.
